Blood pythons are squat, heavy-bodied serpents with variable markings. Blood pythons have different body colors ranges from cherry red or oxblood, yellow, tan & brown to a bright red, with lighter tan, gold, orange & black blotched markings. The head is typically gray, although specimens may exhibit black, light gray, or even red heads. Blood pythons are well known for their attribute of changing head colors – what may be a black-headed snake in the evening could have a very pale, faded head in the morning and vice versa. Some blood pythons exhibit broken dorsal striping.
Blood pythons are very lovely and playful and they are non venomous snakes. Other names for blood pythons includes the following; Brongersma’s short-tailed python, Malaysian blood python, red blood python, red short-tailed python, and Sumatran blood python.
Wild-caught blood pythons tend to be nervous, irritable and even aggressive; on the other hand captive-bred specimens often mature into docile, placid animals that are a joy to handle. This is a specie where choosing a good, CB animal can make a huge difference in your snake-keeping experience. Blood pythons are native to the tropical swamps, marshes, and low forested hills of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. They are considered an intermediate level pet, and are not recommended for beginners.

-
Water
Provide a large water bowl that the snake can soak in, and change the water regularly.
-
Humidity
Maintain a humidity level of 60–70%. You can achieve this by spraying the tank a few times a day, and using a deep substrate that retains moisture.
-
Temperature
Provide 24-hour heating with a cool end and a hot or basking area. A basking spot of 90° F is recommended, with the cool side at 75–80° F.
-
Lighting
Blood pythons are nocturnal, so they only need one light bulb, which should be a heat lamp that also emits UVA.
-
Cage
Start with a 20-gallon long tank.
-
Substrate
Blunt nose bark substrate is recommended due to humidity requirements. Peat moss or coconut fiber can hold moisture, but can cause impactions in the snake’s mouth and nose
